The lost smile...

Published by Pooja under on Friday, February 06, 2009

The other day, I went into this store and the doorman held the door open for me so I thanked him. And he said "Thank you kya,Miss? Yeh toh mera duty hai!" I just smiled and walked on but it really bothers me that people take it for granted that you would be ungrateful for everything they've done for you. I make it a point to be polite to everyone from bus and rickshaw drivers to the kaamwaali bais(maids) to the people who work in department stores whenever I possibly can and everytime I get a surprised("Whats wrong with you?")kinda look from all of them. I dont really blame them, I'm sure they arent used to being thanked but it makes me sad. Why cant people be nicer to each other? I undertstand that you have no time to be nice and courteous when you're keeping up with the fast-paced life of the city but would it really kill you to say sorry when you bump into someone in the crowd?
I mean if people could be a bit nicer to each other, our world would be a lot better place to live in. You never know, with just a few kind words, you could make someone smile. And a real heartfelt smile is the prettiest thing in the whole wide world!
